The New Hampshire Department of Corrections said Shawn Michael Bailey was placed on escape status Saturday night after he left the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester. Bailey, a minimum-security inmate, exited Calumet House at about 10:35 p.m. after being put on house restriction, and his whereabouts are still unknown.
Bailey is 39 and is described by authorities as a white male, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 170 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black hooded CCM sweatshirt, jeans and black sneakers.
The case matters now because the inmate was already serving time for violation of probation, felon in possession of a dangerous weapon and two counts of controlled drug/schedule I–IV; sale, with a maximum custody release date of Aug. 1, 2029. The department said he was “placed on ESCAPE status,” a designation that turns an unauthorized absence from a housing unit into an active search for a man whose record already put him under correctional supervision.
Calumet Transitional Housing Unit is a minimum-security setting, which makes the departure from house restriction more than a routine paperwork issue. It is a reminder that even in lower-security placements, movement is still tightly controlled and any break from that control can quickly become a public safety concern. For readers, the key fact is simple: Bailey left and has not been found.
Anyone with information on Bailey’s whereabouts should contact Chief Investigator Jason Darrah of the NHDOC Investigations Bureau at 848-2569 or call the local police.
