The sent Huascar Brazobán to open Sunday’s game against the , with lined up for the bulk of the work in the 4:10 p.m. ET matchup at Chase Field in Phoenix. New York was trying to win its third consecutive series after a 2-1 loss on Saturday.

The assignment came with Peterson still looking for steadier results as a starter. He has a 6.29 ERA, 3.25 FIP, 1.602 WHIP and a 64 ERA+ over eight games and 34 1/3 innings in that role, though he has been much sharper in relief with a 2.45 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in 11 innings. The right-hander also has history against Arizona this season, after allowing five runs over five innings earlier in 2026.

That earlier meeting matters because is again on the mound for Arizona, and he has been one of the harder pitchers for the Mets to solve. Rodríguez has made seven starts totaling 39 2/3 innings with a 2.50 ERA, 4.42 FIP, 1.286 WHIP and a 168 ERA+, and he has allowed two runs on seven hits over his last 11 2/3 innings while striking out 11. He also held the Mets to one run over six innings earlier in the season.

’s pregame update offered little relief on the injury front. The manager said Luis Robert Jr. has yet to resume baseball activities, said there is no timetable for Jorge Polanco’s return and added that Polanco is going through good days and bad days. Mendoza also said Kodai Senga will throw a bullpen on Sunday.

The bullpen picture remains unsettled as well. threw a bullpen on Saturday, but his rehab clock was recently restarted because of hip soreness, a setback that keeps the Mets’ depth in flux while the offense continues to struggle. New York is still trying to piece together enough length on the mound and enough runs at the plate to turn this West Coast trip into a series win.

Sunday’s game gave the Mets another chance to steady both parts of the operation at once. Peterson’s split profile suggests he can help if he is used in the right lane, but Arizona’s starter has already shown he can make New York work for every run.
