The Dodgers called up Wyatt Mills from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, adding a fresh arm after leaning hard on their bullpen over the past four days. To make room on the 40-man roster, they transferred Edwin Díaz to the 60-day injured list and optioned Paul Gervase to the minors one day after he threw three innings against the Atlanta Braves.
Mills, 31, has a 3.26 ERA in 14 appearances for Oklahoma City and has struck out 28 while walking seven across 19 1/3 innings. He has also worked more than one inning in nine of those 14 games, giving the Dodgers some coverage after their relievers logged 18 1/3 innings over their previous three games and four days. If he gets into a game, it would be his first major league appearance since Sept. 3, 2022, when he pitched for the Kansas City Royals.
That is the shape of this move: the Dodgers did not make it because they had a luxury, they made it because they had run out of easy answers. Tyler Glasnow left his Wednesday start after one inning with back spasms, and the club used six relievers to get through the final eight innings. Blake Snell was pulled back from a rehab assignment one start early to help cover the rotation, and Gervase had been summoned Friday when Glasnow went on the injured list.
Mills’ path back has been a long one. Tommy John surgery wiped out his 2023 and 2024 seasons, and he spent 2025 in Triple-A Worcester in the Boston Red Sox system before joining Oklahoma City. He last pitched Thursday, throwing eight pitches in one-third of an inning with one walk, a small outing that still fits the broader pattern of how the Dodgers may use him if they need length.
Díaz’s move was procedural as much as anything else, but it also underlined how far away he remains. He had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow on April 22 and is expected to be out until after the All-Star break. Roberts said the club would lean on Justin Wrobleski on Monday and that there were a few other pitchers he felt good about being available, while also noting the Dodgers would likely make another move for more coverage.
For Mills, the next step is plain enough. The Dodgers need innings, and they need them now.
