Randolph County Prosecutor Stephanie Luntsford confirmed Friday that the woman accused of stealing a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle is Alayna Mason, 20, of Moberly. Mason was arrested on suspicion of stealing a motor vehicle, stealing a gun and escaping from custody.
Several law enforcement agencies were seen Thursday near Lee and Morley streets after someone allegedly stole the patrol vehicle. The Moberly Police Department said in a Thursday social media post that the suspect was in custody before the theft.
Charges were not filed by Friday because the courts were closed for former President Harry Truman’s birthday. Mason was being held at the Randolph County Jail without bond.
The case centers on an alleged theft that began while the suspect was already in custody, a detail that makes the patrol vehicle’s disappearance harder to square with an ordinary arrest. Prosecutors had identified Mason by Friday, but the formal court process had not yet started.
What happens next is straightforward: charges can be filed when the courts reopen, and Mason remains in jail without bond in the meantime.
