Khamzat Chimaev brushes off Dagestan chatter before UFC 328 title defense

Days before , brushed off the familiar chatter around ’s famous line about “2-3 years in Dagestan.” Asked about it in the lead-up to his title defense against , Chimaev said he had nothing to say about Makhachev’s phrase and added, “Ask Islam. I’m not from Dagestan, I’m from Chechnya,” in an interview with .

The remark lands at a useful moment for Chimaev, who is defending his belt against Strickland at UFC 328. Makhachev’s line became famous after his exchange with about sending his children to Dagestan, and fans as well as many MMA stars have repeated it ever since as shorthand for hard training and toughening up in the region.

That backdrop makes Chimaev’s answer less about geography than identity. He has long been linked with the Dagestan training mythos, but the fighter made a point of saying he is from Chechnya, not Dagestan, and left it there rather than leaning into the legend that has grown around Makhachev’s words.

Chimaev’s mindset also drew praise from Khalil Rountree Jr., who in a recent interview with Adam Zubayraev said Chimaev enters every fight with one mission: to completely destroy the man in front of him. Rountree said he feels very confident about Chimaev against absolutely any opponent, whether it is Strickland or anybody else, and said he expects to be there to witness him consume his opponents in the cage.

With the fight days away, the noise around Dagestan is doing what it usually does in MMA: turning into shorthand for intent, toughness and style. What matters next is whether Chimaev can carry that reputation into the cage and back it up against Strickland on UFC’s biggest stage for the card.
