Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois were set for a sold-out heavyweight showdown in Manchester, with the main-event ring-walks scheduled for 11pm BST and the fight carrying the warning from Wardley himself: “Don’t Blink.” The bout was billed as one of the most explosive and compelling heavyweight contests of the year, and the numbers behind it were stark. Across their 42 wins, the pair had produced a combined knockout ratio of 95%.
Wardley came in as the WBO world heavyweight champion with 19 knockouts in 20 victories, while Dubois had stopped 21 of the 22 opponents he had beaten. The contrast extended beyond the record books. Wardley emerged from white-collar boxing with minimal amateur experience, while both men had built careers on ending nights early rather than extending them.
That made the fight’s tone clear before the first bell. Wardley’s only blemish had been a draw in March 2024 with Olympic medallist Frazer Clarke, but he answered that result seven months later by knocking Clarke out in the first round. Dubois, meanwhile, arrived with his own reputation for heavy-handed finishing, and the pairing was presented in Manchester as an all-British heavyweight showdown that could turn on one mistake.
The undercard had already supplied its own shock before the main event. Zak Chelli upset David Morrell by stoppage in Manchester after Morrell had been winning the light-heavyweight contest through eight rounds, then landed a huge right hand in round nine before forcing the favourite into defeat in the corner at the start of the final round. Carl Frampton called it “A real Rocky moment for Zak Chelli.”
That result sharpened the mood inside the Co-op Live arena, where the crowd was described as sold out and the atmosphere had already been set for a late finish. The timing also left little room for caution: with the ring-walks not due until 11pm BST, the night had already moved past the point where anyone could expect a quiet ending. If Wardley vs Dubois delivered on the records that brought it there, it would not take long to decide.
