Joaquin Buckley returns to the Octagon on Saturday at UFC 328 in Newark, N.J., after nearly a year away, and he says the layoff may have helped him more than hurt him. Buckley faces Sean Brady on the main card in a matchup that could reshape the picture at 170 pounds.
Buckley has fought only once since his 4-0 run in 2024, which included back-to-back finishes of Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington. His most recent outing came in June, when he dropped a unanimous decision to former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC Atlanta.
For Buckley, the time away was not empty time. He said the break was a blessing in disguise and that he stayed busy with smaller jobs and other activities while he waited for the next shot. “It’s been busy. I’ve been keeping myself busy when it comes to just the small things, man,” Buckley said. He added that the time off allowed him to reset after the losses and keep building, including work at RAF and a bout against Pat Downey.
The fight with Brady is also coming at a moment when Buckley expects a rugged, physical test. Brady earned a lopsided stoppage win over former champ Leon Edwards in March at UFC London and enters with a style Buckley believes will press him to the limit. Buckley said Brady is not going to be “a scrub or a punk” and expects takedown attempts and clinch work from the start. “To be honest with you, man, this is going to be one of those good type of fights that I’ll get everything just flowing,” he said. “I think Sean Brady and myself is a match made in heaven.”
There is another wrinkle: Buckley said Brady still has him blocked on social media, a small detail that fits a bigger point for him. Buckley said the bout is really a reintroduction, not just to the UFC but to a new fan base that has not seen him in 10 or 11 months. “I feel like the headline is going to be a reintroduction of Joaquin Buckley for the UFC and Paramount,” he said, making clear he sees Saturday as a reset as much as a fight.
That makes the stakes simple. In a loaded welterweight division, Buckley is trying to turn a long pause and a recent loss into momentum again, while Brady is trying to keep climbing after his win over Edwards. The result will say a lot about where Buckley fits next, and whether his return feels like a comeback or a relaunch.
