The Arizona Diamondbacks called up outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt on Friday for his major league debut, reinstated first baseman Tyler Locklear from the 10-day injured list and designated outfielder Alek Thomas for assignment.
The move gives Arizona its No. 1 prospect and sends away a player who had struggled in center field. Waldschmidt was the organization’s top prospect when he arrived, ranked No. 49 on MLB Pipeline’s national Top 100, and he reached the majors after rising from High-A Hillsboro to Triple-A Reno over two minor league seasons.
Waldschmidt, 31st overall in the 2024 MLB Draft as the Prospect Promotion Incentive pick tied to Corbin Carroll’s National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2023, put up a.921 OPS with Double-A Amarillo in 2025 and opened 2026 with Reno at.289/.400/.477 with three homers. He also drew notice for exceptional defense in center field with the Aces.
The timing matters because Arizona’s offense had been quiet of late, and the club chose Friday to shake up the roster rather than wait for the slump to pass. Locklear’s return adds another bat, but Thomas’ removal leaves a real opening in center and shows how quickly the Diamondbacks are willing to move on when production stalls.
For Waldschmidt, the call-up is the payoff for two steady minor league seasons and a fast climb through the system. For Thomas, it is the sharpest sign yet that his hold on a roster spot had slipped away.
