Byron Donalds said Ron DeSantis would make a very good United States Attorney General, praising the Florida governor as someone who would dig through everything “with a fine-tooth comb” and hold people accountable. The comments came this week during an interview with conservative talk show host Benny Johnson.
Donalds also said DeSantis was “incredibly well-suited” for the attorney general spot, while noting that acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is doing a very good job in the job’s temporary-for-now role after former Attorney General Pam Bondi. He said there are “so many different opportunities,” but made clear he sees DeSantis as a strong fit if the question ever becomes real.
The remarks matter because they add fresh fuel to the speculation around DeSantis at a moment when the governor is nearing the end of his current term and trying to keep the focus on that. DeSantis said this week that he was focused on “running through the tape” in his remaining time as governor, and he repeated that no one has ever asked him to do anything and he has never asked to do anything.
DeSantis has also tried to explain the chatter by pointing to his profile in Republican politics, saying it persists because he is “one of the more well-known Republicans in the country.” He has been coy about future plans, and the attorney general discussion remains speculation rather than any confirmed appointment.
That leaves Blanche in place for now and DeSantis on the outside of the conversation, at least publicly. But Donalds’ comments show how quickly the governor’s next move can become a national story, especially when allies start describing him not just as a political figure, but as someone they believe could step into one of the most powerful legal jobs in Washington.
