Jamal Roberts American Idol return boosts season 24 as finale nears

returned to on May 4 and sang his latest single, “Perfect for Me,” in a velvet suit. The season 23 winner came back to the stage as the competition narrowed to five finalists and the show headed toward its May 11 finale.

Roberts won season 23 with a record-setting 26 million votes, then turned that victory into a run that has kept him in the franchise’s orbit. His debut single, “Heal,” reached No. 1 on ’s Hot Gospel Songs and Gospel Digital Song charts. He also opened for and on their sold-out The Boy Is Mine Tour and earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Gospel Performance/Song for the live version of “Still” with .

The episode put Roberts in the middle of a night that also leaned hard on the show’s history. American Idol marked a 20-year reunion for season 5 and welcomed back Taylor Hicks, Paris Bennett, Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler and Elliott Yamin, while Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson returned to mentor the Top 5. Abdul also joined Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood on the judges’ panel.

That reunion airlifted the current season into a familiar kind of pressure. With Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt and Chris Tungseth left in the field, America’s votes will now decide which three move on. The finale is set for May 11, and will appear as guest mentor during the three hour-long episode, then perform twice to mark the 2001 release of her debut album, Songs in A Minor, including one performance alongside the Top 3 contestants.

Roberts’s return was not just a victory lap. It showed how quickly a new Idol champion can become part of the show’s ongoing story, and it left the current finalists one step closer to finding out whether the next big moment belongs to them.
