Lou Trivino joins Orioles on major league deal amid bullpen injuries

By Stephanie Grant May 5, 2026

Baltimore signed right-hander to a major league deal on Tuesday and optioned to Triple-A to clear space on the active roster. The move gives the Orioles another experienced arm at a time when their bullpen has been thinned by injuries.

Trivino, 34, had just opted out of a minor league deal with the Phillies after spending part of the season at , where he allowed 13 innings with a 2.77 earned run average. He struck out 35.7% of batters, walked 7.1% and kept the ball on the ground at a 50% clip in Lehigh Valley, a sharp run that put him back on the radar after injuries kept him out of the majors in 2023 and 2024.

He signed that minor league pact with Philadelphia in the offseason and initially passed on his first opt-out chance, reporting to Lehigh Valley before the hot stretch that followed. Trivino finished the 2025 season on the Phillies’ big league roster and returned to the majors this year, posting a 3.97 ERA. Across 332 1/3 big league innings, he owns a 3.87 ERA with a 23.5% strikeout rate, a 10.4% walk rate and a 45.3% ground-ball rate. He also has 37 saves and 57 holds.

The Orioles were able to make the move without a corresponding 40-man roster transaction because they already had an open spot, but they still needed a place on the active roster, which is why Gibson was sent down. That matters because Baltimore has 11 players on the injured list, including four relievers, and is expected to miss most or all of the 2026 campaign after shoulder surgery. is on the injured list with elbow inflammation, while and Colin Selby are also sidelined.

The signing gives Baltimore a pitcher with a track record of missing bats and getting grounders, but it also comes with a wrinkle: if the Orioles later want to remove Trivino from the roster, he cannot be optioned to the minors without his consent. For a bullpen already stretched by injuries, that makes this a useful addition now and a decision with consequences later.
