For Everton, the stakes are different but no less immediate. David Moyes wants his side to finish high enough to give the club a serious European route, after players were rebuffed last summer because Everton were not involved in UEFA competition. Moyes has said, “We know if we can do something special it could help us greatly,” and sixth place remains the target that keeps that possibility alive.
The tension is in how cleanly the two storylines can coexist. City are playing like a side that has rediscovered its edge after the middle of March, yet Everton are still close enough to the European places to make this more than a title-race stopover. A result for Guardiola’s team would tighten the pressure on Arsenal and keep their chase alive; a result for Moyes would sharpen Everton’s case that their season still has room to become something more than a midtable grind.
