Star Wars Day is coming early across metro Denver, with libraries, breweries and a run all setting out their plans before May 4 lands on a Monday. One of the weekend’s first stops is Star Wars Celebration at Edgewater Library, scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 1800 Harlan Street in Edgewater.
The Edgewater event will bring in members of the 501st Legion, along with dress-up, treats and crafts. It is the kind of community gathering that has helped turn May the Fourth Be With You Day into a calendar fixture rather than a one-off nod to a movie franchise.
Westword said some of the celebrating for May the 4th will happen in the days leading up to May 4, and this weekend’s lineup makes that plain. At Fiction Beer Company, 7101 East Colfax Avenue, Star Wars Day runs from 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, through midnight Sunday, May 3, with a new black IPA called Maltering the Deal, limited edition glassware featuring the Cantina band, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, flash-tattoos from Silverback Studios and snacks from Sam’s Crumb Cart. The glassware goes on sale at noon Saturday while supplies last.
Another draw arrives Sunday, May 3, when the May the Fourth Be With You 5K starts at 10 a.m. at Frolic Brewing, 12910 Zuni Street in Westminster, and finishes there too. A free local craft brew will be waiting at the finish line, and participants who show up in Jedi or dark-side attire can win extra beer and prizes during post-race festivities all day Sunday.
Golden Library is also getting in early with May the Fourth be With You...a Day Early, set for Sunday, May 3, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 1019 10th Str. That timing is part of the story this year: May 4 falls on a Monday, so the weekend is doing the heavy lifting for fans who still treat the date as a civic holiday. For GenX viewers who saw the original films in 1977, 1980 and 1983, the holiday now has the feel of a tradition that outlasted the opening credits. The answer to whether May 4th Star Wars celebrations are happening in full is yes — and the biggest ones are already underway before the day itself arrives.
