Half Man Hbo Episode 2 Sends Niall to Glasgow and Ruben Off the Rails

By Tyler Brooks May 4, 2026

Half Man’s second episode opens with arriving at Glasgow West University for his freshman year, and his mother’s parting warning is blunt: be bold, have fun and get away from . He tries. On his first day, he meets his two female flatmates, and , and then Alby, the other flatmate, before changing his behavior after hearing that being introverted reads as homosexual. Niall drinks, flirts with both women and starts performing the version of himself he thinks college is asking for.

That act collapses fast. After meeting Alby, the connection between them is immediate, and Alby tells Niall he chose Glasgow for “the music, the nightlife, the women,” before calling him “a performer” who should be majoring in theater. When Niall gets so drunk he pees his pants, Alby gets him home and cleans him up. Niall then calls Ruben and asks him to come to Glasgow, telling him, “I just don’t feel like myself here.”

The episode’s time jump skips ahead a few years in the extended flashback, which means viewers miss much of the bonding that should explain why Niall wants Ruben there in the first place. Once Ruben arrives, he and Niall do boxing practice with Celeste and Joanna watching, and the women dress their wounds afterward. Celeste is hot for Niall and Joanna is excited about Ruben, but the balance keeps tilting toward Ruben’s chaos. He kisses Celeste at length during spin the bottle, then demands that a reluctant Alby join the game and kiss Niall.

From there, the episode turns openly unruly. Ruben does cocaine with Celeste at a students-only pub/disco, sneaks in through the roof and causes a scene, spits in Joanna’s face at the club and then goes off to have sex with Celeste. It is a sharp shift from the earlier scenes of college awkwardness, but it also fits the dynamic the series has already established: outside the premiere’s erotic encounter between the two boys and Mona, Ruben has mostly been shown as the scary one and Niall as the frightened one. That is the real answer the episode gives to the question it poses at the start. Niall brings Ruben to Glasgow hoping to feel more like himself, and the visit makes plain that Ruben is still the force most likely to swallow the room.
