Cj Stroud enters fourth year as Texans face mounting offensive pressure

is entering the fourth year of his career, and the pressure around him has grown louder after the pushed Houston’s offense closer to the center of the conversation heading into 2026.

That pressure is not coming out of nowhere. Stroud won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after throwing for more than 4,000 yards, 20-plus touchdowns and only five interceptions as a rookie, but his production has ebbed and flowed over the last two seasons. In the postseason against the and the , he was responsible for seven turnovers, including five interceptions and two lost fumbles.

There is still a reason Houston has leaned on him this heavily. Stroud has helped lead the Texans to back-to-back AFC South titles, three consecutive AFC Playoff berths and three straight AFC Divisional Playoff rounds. That run gives the organization a real baseline, even as the offense now faces sharper questions about whether it can keep up its side of the bargain.

The setting has not made that task easier. The Texans have gone through two rookie offensive coordinators, and , and Stroud has had to do much of his work behind one of the most volatile offensive line units in the NFL. Critics and skeptics have pointed to what they see as an evaporation of his poise, decision-making, on-field leadership and temperament, a sharp contrast with the composed rookie who looked like the franchise had found its answer.

recently pushed back on that view on the SpeakEasy Podcast, coming to Stroud’s defense as the scrutiny around him intensified. The point of that defense is clear: Houston’s quarterback has already shown he can carry a team through a playoff run, but he now enters a season in which production, protection and composure all have to arrive at once. For Stroud, the next step is not about proving he belongs in the league. It is about proving the Texans can still win with him in the middle of everything.
