He still brings a.368 on-base percentage, and his plate approach remains a strength. Crawford was in the 97th percentile of chase rate and the 86th percentile of whiff rate, so the bat is not the whole problem. The issue is that his defense has slipped hard enough that entering play on Friday, he was the worst-rated shortstop in the sport in defensive runs saved. He also ranked in the sixth percentile of range and the 17th percentile of arm strength, a combination that has made the Mariners look at other ways to use him.
That is where Emerson enters the picture. The young shortstop is one of the top prospects in baseball, and the club is moving toward giving him a look. Olney also suggested that late in the year Seattle may simply choose the nine players it believes give it the best chance to win, saying that is what is on Crawford’s shoulders this season.
The tension for Seattle is straightforward: Crawford has been useful at the plate, but the defensive decline has made the position harder to ignore, especially with a prospect of Emerson’s caliber moving up fast.
