Tamara Korpatsch fights back in Girona to reach Catalonia Open final

By Kevin Mitchell May 3, 2026

fought back from a set down to beat 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 in Girona on Saturday and reach the final of the .

The world No 99 will play in Sunday’s final after the No 7 seed advanced to a meeting that gives Korpatsch another chance to add to the only WTA title she has won, at Cluj-Napoca in 2023.

The result was Korpatsch’s third final of her career and her second of 2026, after she reached the title match in Ostrava in February and lost. This time she had to dig out the win the hard way. Bassols Ribera, ranked No 183, had already made the week look like her own after upsetting No 5 seed 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

That made Saturday’s semifinal a test of whether Korpatsch could absorb a fast start from an opponent who had been the story of the week and still find enough level to turn it around. She did. After dropping the opening set, she shut Bassols Ribera out in the second before edging the decider to move one win from a title she has been chasing since Cluj in 2023.

Kasatkina arrives with more proven range on the WTA Tour, having won four titles, but Korpatsch has already shown in Girona that rankings and seedings have not decided this tournament on their own. Sunday will tell whether the German can finish the job this time.
