Mcdonalds Rival Closes Mooresville Site as Burger Chain Cuts Grow

By Michael Bennett May 3, 2026

has closed its restaurant at 379 W. Plaza Drive in Mooresville, N.C., and a sign in the window said the move was tied to a shift in focus toward other areas poised for growth. The location was listed as permanently closed in an April 21 posting.

The Mooresville shutdown adds to a run of closures for the chain over the past four months. The Habit Burger and Grill closed a site in the Morris Hills Shopping Center at 3043 U.S. Route 46 in Parsippany, N.J., in February 2026 after more than 10 years there, and it shut its Hesperia, Calif., restaurant in early December 2025 after about 10 years of operation.

Founded in 1969 in Santa Barbara, Calif., The Habit Burger and Grill now operates more than 380 restaurants across 14 states and internationally. The company did not say how many more locations could be affected, but the latest closure comes as burger chains across the U.S. keep trimming weaker stores.

said it planned to close 5% to 6% of its 5,831 U.S. restaurant locations in 2026, or about 292 to 350 underperforming units, after already closing 28 restaurants under its system optimization program. In another sign of pressure in the segment, shut all 77 of its Hardee's locations after filed a lawsuit against the franchisee in November 2025 and ARC later filed for on April 20, 2026.

For Mooresville, the result is simple: one more familiar burger stop is gone, and the broader reshuffling in the chain business is still moving through local shopping centers, one storefront at a time.
