David Wright made an unexpected appearance at Angel Stadium on May 1, joining Steve Gelbs during the New York Mets game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. The former Mets captain took part in the latest edition of SNY’s recurring segment, Let’s Be Frank with Steve Gelbs, and put the ballpark hot dog at 5.5.
Wright framed the score as a fair nod to a familiar stadium staple. “To me, this is a classic beer-and-dog baseball game hot dog,” he said, adding that for that reason he was giving it a 5.5.
The rating carried a personal edge. Wright wore No. 5 throughout his Mets career, and the team officially retired that number at Citi Field in 2025. That gave a lighthearted ballpark review a little more weight than most, especially with Wright appearing during the Mets’ trip to face the Angels on May 1, 2026.
Let’s Be Frank with Steve Gelbs is built around a simple premise: Gelbs samples and scores hot dogs from MLB parks. This stop at Angel Stadium turned into something more memorable because Wright was the one handing down the verdict. A player long linked to No. 5 gave the stadium snack a middle-of-the-road score and, in the process, tied the bit back to his own Mets legacy.
For Wright, the moment was short, playful and unmistakably personal. For the Mets, it was another reminder that even a routine road game can still produce the kind of scene fans remember long after the final out.
