DETROIT — The Tigers came home Friday night to open a six-game homestand against the Texas Rangers, with Jack Flaherty scheduled to take the mound at Comerica Park after Detroit finished its road trip with a 5-2 win over the Braves in Atlanta.
The game was set for 6:40 p.m. ET, and the Rangers arrived in Detroit a half-game behind the Tigers in the overall standings. Detroit was tied with the Cleveland Guardians atop the AL Central at 16-16, a position built in large part on a 10-2 record at home that has sharply contrasted with its 6-14 mark on the road.
For Flaherty, the start came with a chance to steady himself after two rough outings. He had been tagged for a 5.33 ERA over his last two appearances, both on the road, and his last outing against Texas came on May 10 last year, when he allowed five runs on four hits, all four of them home runs, while walking two and striking out four in three innings.
That history gave Friday night more than ordinary weight for Detroit, which had just salvaged its trip by beating Atlanta and now faced a stretch that included the Boston Red Sox in the second leg of the homestand. The Tigers have been far better in their own park, and this series against Texas opened a critical run of games before the schedule turns again.
The Rangers countered with MacKenzie Gore, who was making his first appearance against the Tigers as a Ranger. Gore had gone 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA and a 5.50 FIP over his last three starts, allowing 16 hits and 10 walks while striking out 17 across 14 2/3 innings. His last game against Detroit came July 2 last summer with the Washington Nationals, when he gave up two-run ball on three hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings.
That matchup set up a simple test for both clubs: whether Detroit could keep making Comerica Park a refuge, and whether Flaherty could turn a difficult stretch into a clean start against a division race that remains tight by the day.
