Tara Lipinski said Thursday that her surrogate suffered a pregnancy loss in the second trimester, a heartbreaking setback after two years of trying to have a second child with husband Todd Kapostasy. The former Olympic figure skater shared the news on May 1, saying the loss came after a long fertility and surrogacy journey that had already tested the family in every way.
“A few months ago, we lost our baby in the second trimester,” Lipinski wrote. She said the couple had been on their second surrogacy journey for two years, and that their first surrogate, who carried Georgie, was not medically cleared to proceed with their sibling journey. “From the long road in finding a surrogate, to medical clearance setbacks, to a failed transfer, and now this loss… it hasn’t been an easy road,” she said.
Lipinski and Kapostasy welcomed Georgie in 2023, and she has spoken before about the toll of trying to build a family. She has described a five-year fertility journey that included four miscarriages, 24 surgeries, eight egg retrievals and six failed transfers. In June 2024, she said grief and loss had made it take a long time to get “a win.”
The decision to go public now was shaped in part by a recent trip to Washington, where Lipinski traveled to Capitol Hill to speak with lawmakers about making in vitro fertilization more accessible. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz wrote on April 23 that she had met Lipinski and shared infertility journeys with her, saying IVF is out of reach for too many families and urging Congress to act.
Lipinski said the messages she received after that trip helped push her to speak openly about the pregnancy loss. “I realized I had to do it,” she wrote, adding that she had been tearing up while reading messages from women sharing their own stories and fears. For a family that has already spent years moving through failed treatments, medical setbacks and the search for a surrogate, the loss is not just another setback — it is the latest chapter in a fight that has defined much of Lipinski’s path to motherhood.
