Sara Gore, a longtime host of NBC New York’s Open House, announced on Thursday, April 30 that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will step away for treatment and surgery. She told viewers during the broadcast that it “just felt right” to tell them herself.
“I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery,” Gore said. “If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”
Gore said breast cancer runs in her family and that her mother and sister have both battled the disease. She said she had always assumed this day would come, but added, “But let me tell you, you are never ready.”
The diagnosis carries added weight because Gore said the cancer was caught early, yet she still described it as an emotional blow. Early detection can change the medical outlook, but it does not soften the shock of hearing the word cancer, especially when it echoes a family history already known at home.
Gore also said she is surrounded by doctors and by people taking care of her at home, and she closed her message with a promise to return. “I’m going to come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this,” she said.
For viewers who have followed her for years on Open House, the announcement turned a routine broadcast into a personal update and a temporary farewell. The next step is treatment and surgery, and Gore has made clear she intends to come back once that is behind her.
