The Mammoth arrived in Vegas for Game 5 on Thursday with Utah hockey’s First Round locked into a best-of-three. Forward Dylan Guenther, head coach André Tourigny and defenseman Nate Schmidt were all ahead of the matchup, which now carries the weight of a series that has tightened after four games.
That shift leaves little room for error. Both teams were set to make adjustments as the First Round continued with Game 4, and the Mammoth’s trip to Vegas for Game 5 put them back into a building where the margins had already narrowed.
Utah’s recent games had already shown how quickly this matchup can swing. In UTA@VGK, goals came from Carcone, Guenther, Crouse and Marino against Carter Hart. In VGK@UTA, Keller, Carcone, Schmaltz, Cole and Schmaltz scored against Carter Hart. Those results helped shape the path to this point, where one game can change the tone of the series.
The Mammoth also carried forward the response that followed their Game 3 win. Captain Clayton Keller and associate captain Lawson Crouse were part of that moment, along with Tourigny and Guenther, and the victory gave Utah a way back into the series. What comes next is plain: Game 5 in Vegas will decide whether Utah Hockey can seize control or leave the First Round balanced again heading into the final stretch.
