Nhl Playoffs: Brendan Gallagher set for Canadiens debut in Game 5 against Lightning

By Lauren Price Apr 30, 2026

is set to make his 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs debut for the in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round on Wednesday night at Benchmark International Arena, with the series tied after four games. will still be out for the , leaving both clubs to lean on the margins in a matchup that has been tight from the start.

Gallagher had not played through the first four games of the best-of-7 series, but Montreal expects him to bring energy and sandpaper into a lineup that needs both. The veteran forward is also expected to spend plenty of time creating havoc on the doorstep of , who was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy on Wednesday along with and .

That kind of role is familiar to Gallagher, who has played 76 playoff games. It is a different kind of load from the one carried by Tampa Bay’s biggest names: Nikita Kucherov has played 156 playoff games and Vasilevskiy 124, giving the Lightning a core that has been through deep spring runs before. Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said there was no doubt Gallagher would give everything he had if he played, adding that he believes he does that every game.

Montreal has already gotten a glimpse of the mood around Gallagher’s return. Zachary Bolduc said it is fun to have him around because he has been in the and a Canadien for so many years, and said Gallagher has been good even without playing yet. Bolduc added that Gallagher has been talking with the younger players and asking what they saw out there, then summed up the wait by saying the team will have to see if he is in the lineup.

The timing makes the decision matter beyond Montreal’s bench. When a best-of-7 round is tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner goes on to win the series 79.4 percent of the time. The home team has a 150-36 record in that spot, while the road team has gone 89-26, a reminder that the next game can tilt a series before it even reaches its final act. Each team has scored 11 goals through four games, each has taken 34 penalties and each is averaging just over 23 shots per game.

Tampa Bay is still managing its own lineup uncertainty. Hedman last played on March 19 and took a leave of absence from the team on March 25, and he remains unavailable for Game 5. Lightning coach Jon Cooper said the group has a core that has been around, but also a large number of players who are just getting their feet wet in the League, let alone the nhl playoffs. He pointed to experienced voices such as Corey Perry and Ryan McDonagh, while noting that the core has helped calm the team when it needed it.

That leaves Game 5 to be decided by the kind of detail Gallagher has long made his trade. Montreal is counting on him to change the pace around the net; Tampa Bay is counting on Vasilevskiy and its surviving core to hold the line. In a series that has been even in goals, penalties and possession pressure, the first mistake could carry the most weight.
