Charlie Woods missed out on advancing from US Open Final Qualifying on Tuesday, finishing one stroke short of a playoff after an even-par 72 at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. The 15-time major winner’s son tied for 10th in a field that mixed experienced pros and talented amateurs, with five guaranteed places on offer.
Woods opened with a bogey five at the first hole, answered with a birdie three at the par-4 sixth, then made a double-bogey on the 171-yard par-3 seventh. He steadied the round after that, birdied the par-5 10th and par-4 12th, dropped a shot at the 14th, birdied the next hole and closed with par on each of the final three holes.
Brett Roberts took medalist honors with a six-under 66, Blake Timble finished solo second at 68, Hunter Fry was third with a 69 and Eric Dietrich took fourth with a 70. Five players shot one-under 71s, and Tyler Stachkunas won the playoff for the final guaranteed berth while Curtis Thompson and Chris Francoeur earned the two alternate places.
The result extended a familiar pattern for Woods in U.S. Open qualifying. He shot 75 at Wellington Golf Club last year and was seven strokes off the required score, and he posted an 81 at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in 2024. Eagle Trace had been a happier venue for him before Tuesday, with the course also serving as the site of two successful runs at US Junior Amateur qualifying.
Final Qualifying is being staged at 13 sites around the world between May 18 and June 8. Dallas Athletic Club’s Blue and Gold Courses and Walton Health Golf Club hosted the first two fields on May 18, Hino Golf Club’s King Course in Japan hosted a site on May 25, and the remaining 10 sites all come on June 8. The 2026 US Open will be played at Shinnecock Hills from June 18-21.
Woods’ round showed enough fight to stay near the top of the board, but not enough to force extra holes when the line for advancement tightened. He leaves Coral Springs with another near miss and one more reminder that even at a course that once brought him success, the margin at this level is thin.
