New York State Police Mustangs added to patrol fleet for traffic enforcement

By Emily Rhodes Apr 28, 2026

have added 19 Ford Mustang GT patrol vehicles to their fleet, with one prototype already used for training and evaluation and now headed for initial patrols around the Capital Region this week. The rest of the new New York State Police Mustangs are being fitted with emergency lighting, communications and safety equipment before they are sent statewide.

State Police Superintendent said the goal is to give troopers the tools they need to safely and effectively carry out their mission, and said the Mustang strengthens traffic enforcement while supporting efforts to protect drivers on New York’s roads. Officials said the vehicles will be used against aggressive driving, excessive speeding and other hazardous behavior, and police said they cost about 30% less than their SUV counterparts.

The rollout lands as State Police continue shifting their fleet toward SUVs, a move that has made this purchase notable because the Mustang is being kept in the lineup for a specific job rather than as a general patrol car. The cars are being positioned as a traffic enforcement tool, not a replacement for the broader fleet, and that distinction explains why a vehicle known for speed is now being sent after drivers who are speeding too much.

The tension is in that balance: the agency is modernizing toward SUVs while still betting that a Mustang GT can do a job its larger vehicles cannot do as cheaply. The first test comes this week in the Capital Region, where the prototype will begin patrols and the rest of the fleet will follow once the equipment work is finished.

What happens next is straightforward. If the cars perform as officials expect, the Mustang will remain part of the traffic enforcement playbook even as the wider fleet keeps moving toward SUVs.
