Netflix has not said whether Running Point will return for a third season, but the show’s team is already acting as if the answer is close. Showrunner David Stassen said the writers’ room for season 3 is about to open, a sign the streamer is at least leaning toward more basketball drama after season 2 landed on April 23 and jumped straight into Netflix’s Top 10.
The momentum comes after a fast rise for a series that debuted in February 2025 and earned its season 2 renewal just one week later. Stassen said Netflix has not formally picked up season 3, but he added that everyone is optimistic and that the company has already shown confidence by ordering the writers’ room for a potential new run. That matters because Netflix usually waits several weeks to sort through viewing data before making renewal calls, yet Running Point seems to have moved quickly enough to keep the conversation alive.
Kate Hudson leads the cast as Isla Gordon, the president of the fictional L.A. Waves basketball team, in a comedy inspired by the biggest women-run dynasty in sports. The show was created by Mindy Kaling and draws on Jeanie Buss, but season 2 pushed Isla into rougher territory when her older brother Cam left rehab early and tried to reclaim the top spot in the franchise. The season ended with Cam, Al Fleischman and Jay Brown launching a rival basketball franchise, setting up the kind of conflict that would naturally carry into another season.
If Netflix does move ahead, the running point season 2 cast is expected to remain mostly intact. Hudson, Brenda Song, Scott MacArthur, Drew Tarver, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Uche Agada, Chet Hanks and Roberto Sanchez are among those likely to return. Ray Romano, who joined season 2 as the Waves’s head coach Norm Stinson, also appears likely to stay in the mix, along with Scott Speedman as Isla’s admirer Luke McShay, Jake Picking as point guard Tommy White and Richa Moorjani as accountant Aruna. Justin Theroux, Ken Marino and Jay Ellis are also expected back as the main antagonists after their role in launching the new rival team.
The open question now is less about whether the show has an audience and more about timing. If the writers’ room opens soon and production follows the usual pace, a third season could reach screens in early summer 2027. For now, Netflix has not made it official, but the network’s actions and the cast it is lining up point in the same direction: Running Point is being written as if its next season is already in play.
