The Houston Gamblers and Columbus Aviators meet Sunday at Shell Energy Stadium with both teams trying to turn one win into a move up the UFL standings. The Week 5 game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be shown on ABC as part of a Sunday double-header.
Columbus, 1-3 entering the matchup, comes in after picking up its first win of the year, a 3-1 victory over the Dallas Renegades in which the Aviators scored 14 unanswered points in the second half. They pulled away with two second-half touchdowns, including a fumble recovery touchdown, and handed Dallas its first loss of the season.
The Aviators have been one of the league’s sharper offenses through four games. Columbus averaged 299.3 yards per game entering the matchup, ranking third in the UFL, and averaged 23.3 points per game, also third in the league. That gives the Gamblers a clear target on a day when every possession matters.
Houston is also 1-3, but it arrives with a different kind of urgency after a 24-22 overtime loss to the Louisville Kings last week. The Gamblers trailed 16-6 at halftime before scoring 16 points in the third quarter, and running back Marcus Yarns provided the biggest spark with eight carries for 111 yards and a 68-yard touchdown.
The contrast is simple enough. Columbus is trying to prove its first win was a start, not a blip, while Houston is trying to show that the edge it found against Louisville can carry over at home. The team that handles the opening stretch better will have the cleaner path in a game between two clubs that have spent most of the spring looking for traction.
