Social Security Office Closures Hit Several U.S. Locations With Limited Service

By James Carter Apr 26, 2026

Several offices across the U.S. are temporarily closed or limiting in-person service this week, with a small number of field offices operating on phone-only service because of construction, safety limits or other operational issues.

The agency said the closures listed on its website are not permanent. Most locations nationwide remain open, but anyone who needs in-person help must schedule an appointment in advance.

For people trying to reach the agency now, the practical message is to start online or by phone. The Social Security Administration said its website, is the best way to get help, and officials said many issues can be handled without an office visit. To check whether a local office is affected, the agency advises entering a ZIP code into its online office locator.

Five office locations are currently listed with restricted service. Yuma, Arizona 85364 has phone service only from March 23 to May 8, 2026. Mission Viejo, California 92691 has phone service only from April 22 through April 24, 2026. Fort Walton Beach, Florida 32547 has phone service only until further notice. Wailuku, Hawaii 96793 has phone service only from April 20 through April 24, 2026. Decorah, Iowa 52101 has phone service only until further notice.

The temporary changes are tied to planned renovations, required maintenance, facilities issues, construction, safety limitations or other operational problems the agency says it is working to resolve. That matters because disruptions at a local field office can slow access to retirement, disability and survivor benefits for people who rely on in-person help. For now, the clearest answer is the one the agency itself is giving: these closures are temporary, most offices are still open, and the first step is to check before going.
