At least nine people were wounded early Saturday after shots were fired on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington, and police said no suspect had been taken into custody by Sunday morning. Officers on the street were monitoring a large crowd in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue when they heard what they believed to be multiple gunshots at about 12:25 a.m.
The crowd scattered as the shots rang out, and officers found multiple people who had been wounded. Six were taken to local hospitals by ambulance, one was transported in a Bloomington Police Department squad car and two arrived by personal vehicles. An IU Notify Alert later told people to stay safe, shelter, lock doors and avoid the area, while a final update after 1:15 a.m. urged the public to stay away from Kirkwood Avenue as the Bloomington Police Department investigated.
The shooting was on Kirkwood Avenue west of Dunn Street, not on the Indiana University campus, and the campus itself was not the scene of gunfire. The Indiana University Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene, while remotely piloted aerial vehicles and a state police helicopter were used to document and support the investigation.
For now, the most important fact is that the search for whoever opened fire is still open. Police asked anyone with information to call 911, and the unanswered question is whether the person responsible can be identified before more details about why the crowd was targeted come into view.
