Monique Billings brings leadership push to Fever’s crowded front line

By Chris Lawson Apr 25, 2026

says she wants to show the ’s coaching staff something beyond rebounds, rim runs and defense when training camp opens. The veteran forward said her first aim is leadership, a role she believes this group needs after a busy offseason that reshaped the roster.

"I would say leadership," Billings said, making clear what she hopes to bring early. She added that, as "an older player, being a vet," she sees that as part of her job, along with the basketball basics. "Obviously, the basketball stuff, that’s going to be there, too, but, I think along with that, this group can use a leader," she said. "I think Sophie has stepped up in that. I think I could be another person on this team who contributes in that way."

The Fever added Billings, and in free agency and drafted in the first round, giving the team another layer of depth around Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, Lexie Hull and . The additions also sharpen a frontcourt that already asked Boston to do a lot and now has more options depending on who starts at power forward.

That matters because Billings brings size, defense and athleticism whether she is playing next to Boston or backing her up. The fit also comes with some built-in chemistry. Billings said she has worked well with Mitchell in and with Clark on , a useful sign for a team trying to make new pieces click quickly in camp.

There is one clear opening in the rotation and one clear pressure point in the locker room. Natasha Howard left in free agency and signed with the Lynx, leaving the Fever to sort through who takes on that forward role and who helps steer a roster with title-level expectations. Billings is betting that her value will not stop at the box score.

For Indiana, the next step is less about adding names and more about turning them into a unit. Billings has already pointed to Cunningham as someone who has taken on leadership. If Billings earns that same trust, the Fever will have another veteran voice to lean on while Clark, Boston and the rest try to turn a crowded roster into a coherent one.
