Klay Thompson may be nearing the end of his Mavericks run as Dallas rebuilds

By Chris Lawson Apr 25, 2026

’s run in Dallas may be nearing its end. The Mavericks, now in a rebuild after the trade to the , are making it clear they want to build around , and Thompson hinted in a recent exit interview that he might play for another team.

Two seasons ago, Dallas brought Thompson in via a sign-and-trade with the , imagining him as part of a dominant trio with Doncic and . He turned down a more lucrative deal from the Lakers because he believed the Mavericks had the pieces to make a title run after their 2024 Finals appearance, but that plan changed fast when Doncic was moved in Thompson’s first season with the team.

What Dallas is doing now is a full pivot. The franchise is entering a mini-rebuild, and next season it is very unlikely to be a real NBA Finals contender. That leaves little room for the version of the roster Thompson signed up for, the one built around a championship chase rather than a reset.

The friction is plain: Thompson arrived to contend, but Dallas is now operating with a different timeline. The Mavericks have made their direction clear with Flagg at the center of it, and this summer may be the point when they finally pull the plug on the Thompson experiment.

For Thompson, the next step matters because he joined Dallas to win a championship, not to ride out a rebuild. If his exit interview was the first sign of a breakup, the only question left is whether the Mavericks move first or let the season begin with a player whose future no longer matches the team’s plans.
