The Los Angeles Chargers selected Arizona safety Genesis Smith in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft on Saturday, taking him with the No. 131 overall pick. Smith, 21, joins a defense that has leaned heavily on young secondary talent and now adds a player who earned notice for his range and ball production.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked Smith as a top-10 safety prospect and said he has a natural center-field skill set because he reads the quarterback well and gets to the football quickly. Brugler also said Smith has starter-level upside if he makes the necessary improvements, a view the Chargers are betting on after adding him to a room spearheaded by Derwin James, Jr. and including Elijah Molden, Tony Jefferson and RJ Mickens.
Smith arrives with a résumé that fits the profile. He was a Third-Team All-Big 12 selection in 2025 and led Arizona with two forced fumbles that season. Over 37 career games with the Wildcats, he had five interceptions, 14 passes defensed and four forced fumbles, production that helped push him into the draft conversation despite lasting until the middle rounds.
The tension for the Chargers is familiar: Smith has enough playmaking ability to matter, but the draft slide suggests clubs wanted to see more before investing higher. That leaves Los Angeles with a developmental defender who already has evidence of impact and a clear path to compete in a secondary that is both crowded and demanding.
For Smith, the opportunity is immediate. The Chargers did not spend a premium pick on him, but they did use one on a safety with size at 6-foot-2 and 202 pounds, production in college and a scouting report that points to a starter if the rest comes together.
