Alicia Silverstone’s return as Cher Horowitz will not happen at Peacock, at least not for now. The Clueless TV series that Peacock announced in April 2025 is no longer in development there, ending a project that had Silverstone attached to star and executive produce.
The series had brought together a familiar team behind the scenes. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire, along with Dollface creator Jordan Weiss, wrote and executive produced the project, while Amy Heckerling and Robert Lawrence also served as executive producers.
That made the cancellation especially notable because Clueless has already lived twice on screen. The 1995 Paramount feature starred Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy and Paul Rudd, and the 1996 half-hour comedy series followed, created by Heckerling for CBS Studios’ predecessor, Paramount Network Television. It ran for three seasons, with one season on ABC and two on UPN. Rachel Blanchard played Cher because Silverstone was not available, and Dash reprised her role as Dionne. Both versions were loosely adapted from Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, following the adventures of Cher Horowitz, the stylish, wealthy and popular California girl at Bronson Alcott High.
Peacock’s exit does not mean the property has cooled everywhere. CBS Studios owns the TV rights to the Paramount feature classic, and people familiar with the matter said CBS Studios and Paramount remain high on the project and the IP. That leaves the door open for the concept to surface elsewhere, even as the latest version falls off Peacock’s slate. The move also comes as Peacock continues to build out its programming mix, including live sports such as the NBA coverage tied to the network’s broader streaming push, alongside coverage discussed in Basketball Nba Playoffs Return to NBC, Debut on Peacock With Doubleheader, Nbc Sports' Jon Miller says broadcast is stronger as Peacock expands and Nba Tonight: 2026 NBA Playoffs schedule, Peacock streams and NBC coverage.
For now, the answer to whether Silverstone was returning to the role that made her famous is no. Peacock has stepped away from the project, but the Clueless brand remains under active interest at CBS Studios and Paramount, which means the next move may come from a different home rather than a different idea.
