Kansas City reached that stretch by beating Corinthians 2-1 and Palmeiras 6-1 to win the Teal Rising Cup, and the timing matters because the team is trying to turn that momentum into a league result after an uneven start to the season. The Current have lost all three of their previous away fixtures in 2026, scoring one goal and conceding seven, and they remain one of five NWSL teams without a road win this season.
Washington brings a different kind of test. The Spirit sit eighth in the standings with six points, have scored five goals and allowed four, and have built their position on a defense that has been hard to break down. The matchup also pits two of the league’s stronger teams from last season against each other again, with both expected to be in the mix near the top of the table in 2026.
That is where the tension sits for Kansas City. The Current have shown in cup play that they can put pressure on opponents and finish chances, but their league form away from home has not matched that standard. Friday night offered a chance to answer both parts of the story at once: whether the cup run was a real turning point, and whether the road problems that have followed them through the season can finally be left behind.
