Pirates Vs Brewers: Milwaukee opens first NL Central series of 2026

By Stephanie Grant Apr 25, 2026

The opened a three-game series against the on Friday night in Milwaukee, their first meeting with an NL Central opponent in 2026. The Brewers came in last in the division at 13-11, while the Pirates arrived at 14-10 and 1.5 games behind the Cubs and Reds.

That gap at the top is early, but it is real enough to make this series matter now. Milwaukee was trying to reset after a walkoff loss to the on Thursday afternoon, while Pittsburgh was still in the middle of a road trip and had one game left against the Rangers before turning fully to pirates vs brewers in a division race that is already crowded.

The Brewers have had to do it short-handed. , , , , and Jared Koenig were all out, and Craig Yoho was reactivated earlier Thursday before being optioned to Triple-A Nashville. Priester began a rehab assignment this week, and the club also has been waiting on some stability after a fast start gave way to a flatter stretch at the plate. Milwaukee is hitting.241/.342/.368 as a team, with 19 home runs, 124 runs and 35 steals.

Even so, there are a few bats carrying the load. Jake Bauers and Gary Sánchez were tied for the team lead with five home runs apiece, and Brice Turang was hitting.280/.412/.512 with 18 RBIs, 20 runs and seven steals. The Brewers scored 12 runs in Detroit this week, but the broader picture still points to a lineup that has cooled after opening hot.

Pitching has kept Milwaukee afloat. Grant Anderson and Aaron Ashby led the bullpen with 13 appearances each, with Ashby posting a 2.93 ERA and 24 strikeouts, Hall at 2.31 ERA and 14 strikeouts, and Anderson at 2.63 ERA and 11 strikeouts. The Brewers carried a 3.98 team ERA, with a 3.65 starter ERA and 4.36 bullpen ERA.

Pittsburgh brought its own injury issues. Jared Jones was out until May or June with a UCL sprain, and Jared Triolo was the only other Pirates player on the injured list after resuming baseball activities this week. The Pirates’ offense has been steadier than Milwaukee’s so far, hitting.250/.334/.391 with 28 home runs, 123 runs and 24 steals. Oneil Cruz had eight homers and Brandon Lowe had seven.

Isaac Mattson and Gregory Soto led the Pirates bullpen with 13 outings each, and Dennis Santana had 12 appearances. The club had been splitting the first two games of its series with Texas before heading into the finale, which left this matchup with Milwaukee carrying extra weight in a division where the margins are still tight and every early series can change the tone for a week.

What happens next is simple enough: three games will tell whether the Brewers can use home field to steady their season, or whether the Pirates can turn a small edge in the standings into something more durable before April gives way to May.
