Square Enix has revealed Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the next expansion for its long-running online game, and said it will launch in January 2027. The announcement came during the 2026 FFXIV Fan Fest opening keynote ceremony, where Creative Business Unit III also unveiled a nearly four-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer.
The trailer showed the Warrior of Light as a Reaper and framed him as a man from the sky, as well as the Wanderer in the grandmother's story. Square Enix said Evercold will begin a new era of storytelling for Final Fantasy XIV as part of the Godless Realms Saga, giving the expansion a clear narrative role rather than treating it as another routine add-on.
That matters because Final Fantasy XIV is still one of Square Enix's most watched live games, and Evercold is being positioned as a reset point for how the MMORPG grows. The company said the main scenario will be set on one of the universe's reflections called The Fourth, while the expansion will also be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PC, keeping it on every platform where the game is currently playable.
Square Enix also used the reveal to signal a wider overhaul of the game's design. It said Final Fantasy XIV will receive significant updates to suit the busy lifestyle of today's players and will introduce a new Season system for Evercold. One season will be made up of two patches, an even patch and an odd patch, with the company pointing to Patch 7.0, Patch 7.1, Patch 7.2 and Patch 7.3 as part of the structure around the change.
The tension is that Evercold is promising both a fresh start and a more flexible way to play, but Square Enix has not yet shown how those goals will work in practice. The expansion will include an expanded character customization toolset, improvements to public fields and quests, and battles that evolve as part of ever-evolving content, but the company said more information about those updates will arrive at future Fan Festivals.
For now, the answer to the question hanging over the reveal is straightforward: Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is not just another expansion. It is the opening move in the Godless Realms Saga, and Square Enix is using January 2027 to mark the point where the game's story and its structure both change at once.
