Sophie Cunningham Contract Comments: Fever guard pushes back on extension chatter

By Stephanie Grant Apr 24, 2026

guard pushed back Wednesday on the online chatter around her new contract, saying she was not upset about the money after signing a one-year, $665,000 deal. She told reporters at the team’s media day that she wanted more years on the contract because she loves it in Indiana and wanted the chance to buy a house and bring her dog and donkey to Indianapolis.

Cunningham addressed the issue after a social media post suggested she was unhappy with the extension. On X on Monday, she wrote that she was “gonna shut this down right now” and said she wanted more years, not more money, adding that she believed the Fever had “something very special here in Indiana.”

Her response came three days after she signed the deal on Sunday and a day after she posted a video of her adult baptism. In that post, she said she had been baptized as a child but felt a pull to do it again on her own terms as an adult, calling it a “fun, amazing day” and thanking Jesus.

At media day, Cunningham also used the moment to talk about her future beyond the court. She said she hopes to bring positivity and honesty to broadcasting, noting that she has been on both sides of media and wants to be someone who “brings smiles” and “brings positivity.”

The exchange landed in a season where the Fever are drawing heavier attention than usual during the era, which has put a brighter spotlight on everything the team says and does. Cunningham said critics can keep spinning clips, but she wants people to watch the full conversation before drawing conclusions.

What stands out is how quickly a contract story turned into a broader one about image, identity and how players speak for themselves. Cunningham’s comments, and the way she framed them, suggest she is just as interested in telling her own story as she is in signing the next deal.
