Two castaways were sent home in the latest Survivor 50 twist, and Christian Hubicki remains in the game. Last week’s episode split the players into pairs before an immunity-reward challenge, with Cirie Fields forced to sit out because the numbers did not line up.
Jeff Probst said the pairings were part of the season’s double duo shakeup, and the twist went further than a standard team challenge. Under the format, partners were tied together at the immunity challenge and again at tribal council, so if one contestant went home, the other went with them. Tiffany Ervin and Joe Hunter won reward and immunity as a pair, while Benjamin "Coach" Wade and Chrissy Hofbeck were eliminated together.
The result made Wade and Hofbeck the second and third jury members of Survivor 50, and it also narrows the remaining field for the season’s cast list. Hubicki, who previously played on Season 37, David vs. Goliath, is among the names still left after the latest cuts.
The twist leaves little room for survival by association, and that is the point. In a game built on individual calculation, the double duo setup turned one loss into two, and the cast still standing now has to play around that risk every time pairings come up again.
