Anton Bonke committed to Michigan State on Wednesday afternoon, giving the Spartans a 7-foot-2 center whose path to East Lansing appears nearly complete. Jon Chepkevich of DraftExpress reported the decision, and everything now seems to point to Bonke wearing a Michigan State jersey in 2026-27.
Bonke, who is technically testing the NBA Draft waters, averaged 10.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game at Charlotte last season. He was also 13th in the NCAA this season in total rebound percentage, a number that helps explain why he moved quickly to the top of Michigan State's board.
The commitment matters because Michigan State may have only one transfer portal pickup this offseason, and Bonke fills a need with at least one roster spot still open after Divine Ugochukwu's departure in the portal. Bonke was ranked 108th overall in the portal cycle by On3, 13th among all centers, and at the time of his commitment was considered the fourth-best available center on the market.
That is a notable rise for a player who only started playing basketball when he was 16. Michigan State was weighing Bonke against Charleston transfer Christian Reeves and Washington transfer Franck Kepnang, a short list that shows how targeted the Spartans were in looking for size.
The final detail may be the most revealing: Bonke is still testing the draft process, but the move to Michigan State looks like the most likely next stop. If that holds, the Spartans will have added a late-blooming center whose production at Charlotte and rebounding numbers suggest he can help right away.
