North Carolina is still in the mix for Wake Forest transfer Juke Harris as the transfer portal officially closed Tuesday, leaving the 6-foot-7, 200-pound guard weighing three final options: North Carolina, Michigan and Tennessee.
The clock mattered because Harris had become one of the more closely tracked names left in the portal. Rumors have circulated that North Carolina is willing to offer more money than Michigan for his services, and Tennessee’s roster math may now be the hardest to beat. The Volunteers added California transfer guard Dai Dai Ames this offseason and have brought in Jalen Haralson among others, while VCU transfer Terrence Hill Jr. committed to Tennessee on Sunday morning, a move that only tightens the competition for minutes.
That is why Harris has stayed on North Carolina’s radar. Michigan has been viewed as a potential fit, too, and a separate report on the Wolverines’ portal push — “Dj Wagner watch: Michigan circles Juke Harris, Flory Bidunga in portal push” — has added to the sense that he remains a live target in Ann Arbor.
Tennessee has been one of the most active teams in the portal this offseason, but activity can create a problem as quickly as it solves one. The article says there is not enough room for Harris in Tennessee’s starting rotation, which leaves the Volunteers needing either a clearer opening or a stronger pitch than the one they have already built with Ames, Haralson and Hill.
With the portal now shut, Harris no longer has the luxury of waiting out a crowded market. The decision now looks like a straight choice between money, fit and playing time, and that balance may be what sends him to Chapel Hill, Ann Arbor or somewhere else entirely.
