Stephen Colbert exit adds a jolt as CBS shifts late-night hour

The change, laid out in a separate report tied to the network’s schedule shift, gives Allen a foothold in a slot long defined by Colbert’s signature blend of politics and comedy. It also lands at a moment when broadcasters are watching closely for whether viewers follow a familiar face, a new name or simply the brand.

That question matters because the late-night block is no longer just about jokes after midnight. It is about ad sales, audience loyalty and what a network thinks can survive in a smaller, more fractured TV market. CBS is not betting that the hour can stay frozen in place.
