For a player who was scapegoated for the Leafs’ repeated playoff failures, that kind of production was the cleanest rebuttal he could have offered. Marner also has 63 points in 70 playoff games, but the numbers that linger from Toronto are the quieter ones: from 2019 through his final season there, he had seven assists and zero goals in games 5 through 7 of playoff series.
That history is why his move into Vegas carries more weight than a simple change of address. The Golden Knights have made a habit of rewriting old narratives, with Jack Eichel becoming a key part of a Cup-winning squad after arriving and leading the club in points in all but one full season since, including the 2023 playoffs. Marc-Andre Fleury did something similar by taking Vegas to the Final in its inaugural season before later winning a Vezina trophy.
Marner’s first season in that setting suggests Vegas may be the rare place where reputation can be reset by the standings and the scoreboard. The next question is not whether he can produce in the regular season; it is whether the weight that followed him out of Toronto can finally stay behind.
