New York Weather turns colder as rain, wind and coastal flooding move in

By Michael Bennett Apr 19, 2026

New York weather is shifting fast after a week of summertime warmth, with a strong cold front expected to sweep through the region on Sunday and knock temperatures down by the afternoon. Much cooler conditions are expected to follow, and sub-freezing temperatures are expected in the suburbs next week.

Fog was likely to develop overnight Saturday, especially along the coast, as temperatures settled into the upper 40s to low 50s. The greatest chance of rain showers was expected by daybreak Sunday, with the shoreline under or Statements through 2 a.m. Sunday and the potential for up to 1 foot of inundation.

Showers were expected to become more widespread after sunrise and continue through the early afternoon, though rainfall amounts were expected to stay light at around a quarter of an inch or less, with slightly higher totals north and west of the city. The cold front was expected to push highs into the morning hours, when temperatures were in the mid 50s, before they slid into the 40s by afternoon.

Winds were expected to pick up as the front moved through, and windchills were forecast to be in the 30s by the end of Sunday. That colder air is not just a one-day change: a was expected to cover most of New Jersey from Monday night into Tuesday morning, signaling a sharp return to late-season chill after the brief warm spell.
