Police swarmed a home on Huey Street near Elwood Avenue in South Bend on Wednesday afternoon, then went inside and came back out with nobody. The heavy police presence began around 1:30 p.m. and escalated by about 2:25 p.m., when officers started surrounding the house as neighbors watched from behind a blockaded street.
Witnesses said nearly 15 SWAT team members moved in with weapons drawn and stayed in position for more than an hour. Officers could be heard calling out to the address and ordering anyone inside to come out, while police kept residents at a distance and shut down the entire street.
A South Bend Police Department SWAT member said the operation was tied to a shooting earlier that morning in Elkhart County. That link explains why the scene drew such a large response in South Bend, even as the neighborhood was left guessing who, if anyone, might be inside.
The home ended up empty when law enforcement entered it, and police have not said who lived there or whether anyone was arrested. For the people on Huey Street, the afternoon brought more confusion than answers, and the one fact that mattered most was the only one officers could confirm on the scene: nobody came out of the house.
