Alex Molcan and Denis Shapovalov will meet in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Bavarian International Tennis Championship Open in Munich after both won straight-set matches to reach the last eight at MTTC Iphitos. Molcan upset the home crowd by beating Daniel Altmaier 7-6, 6-2, while Shapovalov moved through with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Fabian Marozsan.
For Molcan, the result was a notable run from qualifying into a matchup with a player ranked 39 in the world and 127 places above him. The Slovak will be facing Shapovalov for only the second time, with their first meeting coming four years ago in Doha, where the Canadian won 6-4, 6-0.
That gap in rankings gives the quarter-final a clear shape, but Molcan has already shown in Munich that he can ignore the script. As a qualifier, he has taken out Altmaier to get here, and now he steps into a rematch with a player who handled him comfortably the first time they played.
The question in Munich is whether that earlier result still holds, or whether Molcan’s run through the draw can stretch one round further against a higher-ranked opponent who has looked sharp enough to match him point for point on the way in.
