Erie Insurance plans to move customer service and members of other departments from several locations to its Westport facility in Millcreek Township, while also shifting some employees to its downtown location. The moves will begin in phases in early June and affect several hundred workers.
The company said Thursday that the relocation is intended to support employees and customers and to improve collaboration, training and day-to-day coordination within the company. Westport is on West 23rd Street in the same plaza as Wegmans.
The shift involves employees now spread across several locations, not just one office, and it sends part of the workforce to a site in Millcreek Township while moving others downtown. That split underscores the company’s aim to bring more of its work closer together even as it redraws where that work is done.
For Erie Insurance, the key question now is how smoothly the transition happens near the start of summer, when employees from several functions are expected to begin moving out in phases. Several hundred people are being asked to adjust to new routines, and the company is betting that a different map will make its daily operations run more easily.
