Ufc 328 Press Conference sets Newark stage for twin title fights

By Chris Lawson May 8, 2026

UFC 328 is set for Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, where will defend the middleweight title for the first time against and will defend the flyweight title against in the co-main event.

The card marks the second straight year twin title fights have topped the bill when the Octagon returns to Prudential Center, and it gives Newark its annual stop on the UFC calendar for the third year in a row. It is also the 11th UFC event in the city dating back to UFC 78: Validation, which was held in Newark and is cited as the first of those shows.

Chimaev arrives as champion after winning the belt at UFC 319 by defeating Dricus Du Plessis last August. The 26-year-old has spent his rise built on pressure and pace, and now gets a first defense against a challenger who already knows how quickly a title run can turn. Strickland, 35, earned this shot in February with a third-round stoppage of .

That opportunity comes after a rocky stretch for Strickland. He won the title at UFC 293 by shocking , then lost each of his last two championship bouts. The rematch with gold on the line now gives him a chance to reset that record against one of the division’s most aggressive champions.

Van brings a different kind of momentum to the co-main event. The 24-year-old took the flyweight title from at UFC 323 last December, while Taira, 26, was already near the front of the line after stopping two-time champion Brandon Moreno before this fight was scheduled. Taira has lost only once inside the Octagon, by split decision to Brandon Royval.

There is also a wrinkle in how UFC 328 got here. The card was originally scheduled for last month at UFC 327 in Miami before moving to Newark, shifting one of the year’s biggest events back to a building that has become a regular stop. That change leaves Prudential Center with back-to-back years of twin title fights and a headline pairing that carries both history and urgency into the winter schedule.

For Newark, the stakes are bigger than one night. For the fighters, the coming defenses will tell whether the belts are settled or still up for grabs in divisions that have already changed hands fast.
