Mark Hamill posts Trump death image, prompting White House backlash

posted a photo on on Wednesday depicting President as dead and captioned it, “If Only.” In a follow-up message, the actor said Trump should live long enough to see his “inevitable devastating loss in the midterms,” be held accountable for his “unprecedented corruption,” and be “impeached, convicted & humiliated” for his “countless crimes.”

The post landed in the middle of a fresh round of anger over political violence and drew a swift response from the . , a spokesman, called Hamill a “deranged lunatic” and said he was calling for Trump to die. He also pointed to Hamill’s appearance three days earlier in a video with former President to mark Star Wars Day and the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

Hamill has been one of Trump’s more frequent critics, but his latest post carried a sharper edge than his usual commentary. On Monday, during an appearance on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, he said he was “really ashamed” that America elected Trump president a second time and added that the second Trump administration is “on us.” He said it was difficult because he had always believed there were more decent and honest Americans than others, and that he now felt “in the minority” in his own country.

The timing gave the post more force. said it came just days after an assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, where was accused of trying to assassinate Trump. Hamill did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The immediate question now is not whether he meant the post as a political attack, but whether a celebrity already known for his criticism of Trump has crossed into language that is hard to separate from a call for violence.
